Carney was an economist before he was a politician. He knows how to count. Every public statement he has made regarding the assault on Jewish life, in Canada and beyond, has been calculated to make clear that Canadian Jews don't count enough in his party's electoral calculus while preserving an appearance of statesmanlike concern. It's a careful, even masterful performance. And deeply cynical. His speech demonstrates that he has perfected this particular political art form. Of course he has had lots of practice.

Thank you for laying bare Carney’s complete failure to acknowledge his own and his government’s complicity in the current state of anti-Jewish hatred, unpunished intimidation and growing violence towards the Jewish community in Canada - let alone announce any substantive measures to rectify the situation!

This ignoble speech, IMHO, is the final nail in the coffin of Jewish life in ‘Liberal’ Canada. I hope this speech and its well-deserved condemnation by yourself, TAFSIK, Unapologetically Jewish and others receives global attention, derision and condemnation. May Carney and the Liberals be jeered out of office for this ugly, performative betrayal of the Jewish people of Canada who have done so much over the past 200 years to build Canada into a (formerly) great nation!

Carney does not get it. anti Zionism = anti Semitism. He never will. He is leading the charge on a values taken over by cancel culture progressive rational. God help us.

Although present in the Holy Blossom Temple, Prime Minister Carney spoke not to the Jewish Community present but to "all Canadians". Did he actually see them? Did he want to listen to their concerns?

Certainly a missed opportunity by design.

How he avoided citing the Israeli massacre on Oct 7th and anything connecting our communities to Israel and what actually is Zionism is both unforgivable and worrisome.

PM Carney, when 1% of the Canadian population is subjected to 70% of reported hate crimes in this country, you have a unique problem that requires an aggressive political, legal and public security response all too absent for the past 3 years.

His announced new initiative Ministry will fail to change our reality.

Carney's speech was emotionally hollow and far from reassuring.

Great stuff as always, Adam!

Excellent piece.

Infuriating address. An afront. Grandstanding. Political theatre. Pig slop (mixed leftovers one serves pigs since it’s not quite worthy of the trash - but oh, if pigs could speak).

Personal biases aside, Carney will not politically align with the facts-based issue nor with the morally accurate stance. He will just politic. Why is that?

We live in the era where catering to the FRINGE for votes and applause is MO for public and private bodies corporate in democratic nations. The fringe tolerates platitudes paid to causes which ought to be downright abhorred, so long as those platitudes are laundered by context, equivocation, morass, and proper pole positioning.

The answer must be the return of the sane center. The awakening of the (dare I say, vast) majority. But these antisemitism issues (despite being well documented and despite their historical perennial recurrence being evidence of their likely cause of much of what Jews are facing today) remain foggy to most in terms of their insidiousness and their being harbinger of what’s to come for non Jews. Demographics (IE population disparity) remain an uphill battle. But they always have, but we have seen better times than these nevertheless.

And in those times, it was not the “Jewish” that motivated change but it was the Jewish which was recipient of societies’ tolerance and respect when the upstanding, level-headed, moral majority fixed shit.

Get rid of the ability of governments to serve pig slop. Restore normalcy. Restore clarity. Restore the middle and truncate polarity. Before borders self-correct and periods of strife resurface.

Unbelievably depressing. Thank you for this essay.

You have him nailed. Carney reminds me of the medieval bishop wagging his finger and telling the mob not to ransack the ghetto and then preaching about Christ killers at Sunday Mass. His speech is just a proactive fig leaf to absolve himself from a future Canadian Bondi Beach.

Also, he failed on the math. Correct me if I’m wrong but I’ve seen many sources say we are less than ONE TENTH of a percent of the population of Canada, not one percent. That’s 0.1%. So a) he really is out of touch of our reality, and b) we’re even less important to the government than anyone thought.

Actually 1% is about right. Approximately 400,000 Jews in Canada out of a total population of about 40 million.

Ok, then I stand corrected!

carney has done his calculation: when he was advising justin, they let many immigrate from the Middle East. Now Muslims outnumber Jews in Canada by almost 4:1. THOSE are his values now.

“Canada’s compact is failing Jewish Canadians”. I hate to be pedantic but I need to correct your analysis. This is not passive voice as there are both a subject and an object. Your point, though, that the failing compact means the government is failing its Jewish population is well-taken. He should have taken that next step.

Scratch a progressive and you will find an anti-Semite. It works in the Liberal party in Canada, the Labour party in the UK, and the Democrat party in the US. Any Jew who votes for these parties is a fool at best and a coward at worst. If Jews don’t stand up for themselves, no one else will.
