I agree with Daniel that many Canadians have minimal understanding of Israel and the war. In Israel, and among Jews here, I'd say the divide is not only pro vs. anti- Bibi. It is 'bring the hostages home at any cost' vs. 'fight this war so that Hamas can never regroup to kidnap and kill more Israelis.' Can we bear the deaths of the hostages and IDF soldiers now to prevent future murders? It's an unbearable question and many of those advocating to get the hostages now do not want to look at the cost of withdrawing, leaving Hamas in power and perhaps condemning half the living hostages to death.

Love the feedback, thank you. I agree there is so much more confusion and nuance, but the key word in what you said is "unbearable"

I'm not sure I agree on this. When it comes to Israel, your theory makes sense, but I believe most people are quite oblivious about Israel. They have opinions, mostly shaped by biased information from politicians and the limited mainstream media that informs most people's worldview, but it’s not a top issue for most. This may be especially true in Canada, given our proximity and dependence on the U.S. and our national preoccupation with Trump, where left-right perspectives still strongly influence debate.

Thanks so much for the feedback. I think you're probably right about people's obliviousness when it comes to Israel, but for several reason it just feels different to me this time around. I am always (pleasantly) surprised however when I talk to people and they seem to be genuinely unaware. Blissful ignorance of the best kind, can you imagine not waking up and worrying about this every day?

Your thesis simply and clearly explains the new zeitgeist. What had been so confusing and confounding when trying to understand the post-October 7th world now makes sense and rings true. Thank you!

Thank you again, Adam, for your optic on the choices we are facing everyday. In their hearts, all Israelis know that we cannot eradicate Hamas, or groups that hold the Hamas ideology, simply by not ending the fighting. I, for one, will continue to attend the weekly or daily protests in a desperate attempt to try and save the hostages' lives. They have become the "Israeli moral test" for us: are we leaving our people, our sons and daughters behind?

Even so, I totally agree with you, one can be morally defined by standing with Israel or against it. This is an important statement and helpful that you are making. This is why it is imperative that Israel remain morally unimpeachable in word and deed, towards her own citizens and towards the Palestinians civil populations. Thank you for your posts. I always look forward to them.
